Christianity Leaves No Room for the Middle Ground

"So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth".

Revelation 3:16

These are some of the most sobering words in all of Scripture. They remind us that Christianity doesn’t leave room for the middle ground; you’re either on fire for God or you aren’t. Jesus didn’t say that being "lukewarm" was better than nothing. In fact, He said He would prefer we were cold rather than middle-of-the-road. Why? Because "lukewarm" is a state of false security. We think we’re safe because we haven’t walked away, but we aren't truly following because we haven't jumped in. We have traded the fire of the altar for the comfort of the sidelines, and we have mistaken being "near" God for being "in" His will.

The Bird on the Wire: The Trap of Indifference

This spiritual lukewarmness is exactly what it looks like to live on the fence. We often act like a bird perched on a wire.

A bird on a fence isn't committed. It isn't on the ground, but it isn't in full flight, either. It sits there with its wings slightly tensed, ready to fly away the moment things get too "hot" or the moment God asks for something it isn't ready to give.

Like that bird, many of us are just waiting. We stay close enough to the Truth to feel "good," but far enough away to keep our options open. But here is the reality: A bird cannot build a nest on a fence, and you cannot build a life on indecision. Indifference is not a neutral zone; it is a slow drift away from the heart of God.

Stop Trying to Walk the Line

Many of us spend our lives trying to balance our spiritual desires with our worldly comforts. We want enough of God to feel blessed, but enough of the world to feel "normal."

Stop trying to walk the line. Walking a line is exhausting. It requires constant calculation. You are never fully at peace in the presence of God because you’re worried about what you’re giving up, and you’re never fully happy in the world because your conscience is pulling you toward something greater. God isn't interested in a 50/50 arrangement; He wants all of you.

The Call to Commitment

You can’t live on the fence forever. Eventually, the fence will break. Life will throw curveballs at you, and in those moments, you will find that a half-hearted, indifferent faith isn't strong enough to hold you up.

Make a decision today to give yourself fully to God's will. Commitment isn't about working harder; it's about letting go. It’s about admitting that your way isn’t working and that God's way is the only way that leads to life. Don't wait for a "better time" to get serious about your faith. The fire is waiting, jump off the fence and into His will today.

Today's Reflection

Before you close this page, take a moment to sit with these questions. Be honest with yourself and with God:

  1. The Safety of the Fence: What is the specific "comfort" or "habit" that makes the fence feel safer than full commitment? What are you afraid will happen if you let it go?

  2. The Bird’s Wings: In what areas of your life are your "wings tensed"; meaning, where are you keeping an exit strategy just in case God asks for too much?

  3. The Temperature Check: If Jesus were to describe your heart today, would He use the word "fire," or would He see the cooling embers of indifference?

  4. The Choice: If you knew that the fence was going to disappear tomorrow, which side would you want to be standing on?

The middle ground is a myth. The only place where life truly begins is in the centre of God's will.
